Singer Cathy Lemons, described as “the finest light-skinned female blues vocalist in the U.S.” (Real Blues 2010), has partnered with guitarist, harmonica whiz, and vocalist, Stevie Gurr to create a fabulous, raw and exciting new CD, “Black Crow,” on Vizztone. Come celebrate its release with us!
Originally from Dallas, TX, Cathy Lemons has performed and recorded with some of the great names in blues: Anson Funderburg, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Lee Hooker (she toured as his send-off singer in 1987), Tommy Castro, Ron Thompson, and many others.
In her new Vizztone release, BLACK CROW, Cathy and her band hone the vibrant gospel, blues, and R&B traditions of her native Texas into a woman’s love rights for the new millennium--a don't push me around--nothin' gonna get me down kinda thing. Adding the rich flavors of Memphis soul, James Brown funk, and sweet Delta blues, the music illustrates Cathy’s personal story of joy, heartache, and redemption. Of the 10 tunes included on the CD 6 were written by Cathy, with covers by New Orleans legend Earl King, Kim Wilson, James Brown, and Kieran Kane. Of particular note is the emotional ache and breathless beauty of the title tune, “Black Crow,” co-written with producer Stevie Gurr.
Recorded at the Greaseland Studios of co-producer “Kid” Andersen, along with guest musicians Doug “Mr. Low” James (of Roomful Of Blues, Jimmie Vaughan) and highly respected guitarist, Volker Strifler, Cathy has recorded what is indeed her best work ever.
