Tommy Castro’s new album, A Bluesman Came To Town, is a captivating roots music journey that blends storytelling with powerful blues guitar. Created in collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Tom Hambridge, the album follows the tale of a young man who, bitten by the blues while working on a family farm, masters the guitar and sets off to find fame. The 13 tracks, including Blues Prisoner and I Caught A Break, are each compelling on their own, but together they form a larger narrative about self-discovery and the realization that what’s truly valuable is often what’s left behind.

Castro, known for his intense stage presence and soulful vocals, draws on his decades of experience on the road. The album reflects not just his personal journey but the struggles and triumphs of his friends in the music world. With a career that has seen him perform thousands of gigs worldwide, Castro’s music carries a raw energy that connects deeply with audiences. As he reflects on the creative process, Castro shares that working with Hambridge exceeded his expectations. “Collaborating with him was even better than I imagined,” he says, describing how the songs grew naturally from their discussions.

Born in San Jose, California, Castro’s love for blues music was sparked by legends like Elvin Bishop and Taj Mahal, and he honed his craft on the competitive San Francisco club scene. Over the years, his distinct blend of blues, rock, and soul has earned him a loyal following and critical acclaim. His role as the house band on NBC’s Comedy Showcase in the 1990s introduced him to a larger audience. With albums like Hard Believer and Killin’ It–Live, Castro and his band, The Painkillers, have become known for their high-energy, soul-shaking performances. As he prepares to hit the road again, Castro remains committed to authenticity, always giving his all on stage.
